Dr. Robert B. Abernethy was a world leader in Weibull analysis especially as the author of the Weibull analysis worldwide standard reference . . . The New Weibull Handbook(c). He retired from Pratt & Whitney (P&W) Aircraft after 32 years where he was involved with the development and application of advanced Weibull (including Weibayes) techniques. In addition to the U.S.A., he produced his Weibull workshop in Australia, China, Japan, Israel, Europe and Canada. Dr. Abernethy was a fellow of ASQ, AIAA, the Society of Automotive Engineers and the Royal Statistical Society. Dr. Abernethy was an SAE Fellow in recognition of his success in developing Weibull Analysis. He was a past Chairman of the ASME Committee on Performance Test Codes 19.1 for which he received the 1988 ASME Gold Medal; and Chief American Delegate to ISO TC30, SC9. Dr. Abernethy invented the J58 engine for Pratt & Whitney which is the power plant for the fastest self-powered manned aircraft ever, the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird. He was a U.S. Navy Scholar as well as a Fulbright Scholar to Great Britain and held four degrees in engineering and statistics. The bottom line: Dr. Bob Abernethy was one of the great technical minds of the twentieth century with notable lifetime achievements that few will surpass.
